The Organization of Loyola’s Activist-Surfers (O.L.A.S. -- Spanish for “waves”) represents the social and legal concerns of Loyola’s, Southern California’s, and the world’s surfing community. Surfing is a unique recreational activity that combines sport and culture, leading its devotees to adhere to a distinct, and often misunderstood, lifestyle. While that lifestyle includes recreation, leisure, and travel, it also requires adhering to a certain moral code. The code entails environmental consciousness, local and global social awareness, cross-cultural sensitivity, and generally progressive thinking. In establishing O.L.A.S., it is our purpose to provide Loyola’s surfing community an outlet to uphold and advance this code.
